Medicine
The department of community medicine at GMC Jammu undertakes numerous
activities. Some of the activities being conducted are as follows:
Internship Training Programme
The internship in community medicine is mandatory for six months.
The interns are posted in the rural health blocks and urban centres
for 6 weeks each.
Co-ordination
The department is coordinating all the activities of prevention
and control of HIV infections/AIDS with other departments of GMC,
Jammu and on behalf of J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control
Society. The department coordinates the activities under BADP. National
Institute of Health and Family Welfare had also nominated the department
for regional coordination for J&K state AIDS surveillance 2002.
Medical Education Unit
The department is a nodal point for carrying out the activities
of Medical Education in GMC, Jammu in which integrated teaching
of postgraduate students, teaching in Bio-statistics for postgraduate
students and organizing inter-departmental clinical meetings are
carried out.
Programme Study Centre
The department is programme study centre for Postgraduate Diploma
in Maternal and Child Health (PGDMCH) of IGNOU.
Trainings
The department is involved in many training programmes which include
training on HIV infections/AIDS for all categories of staff including
medical officers, mid-level managers and functionaries of Social
Welfare Department, training and teaching of Health Inspectors in
coordination with State Medical faculty and in-service training
for medical officers, para-medics and para-professionals on primary
health care/national health programmes.
Family health awareness campaigns
and social mobilization
The department organizes these campaigns in the Medical college
blocks and urban slums of Jammu city and for social mobilization,
rallies, symposia and seminars etc. are conducted.
Camp organizing
A number of general health check-up camps, free eye camps, cancer
detection camps etc. are organized in the field practice areas.
IPPI days are observed and mass immunization is given by mopping
up operations. Hepatitis-B immunization camps are also organized
in rural areas.
Monitoring and evaluation
Evaluation of IPPI coverage is done in Jammu district with the assistance
of UNICEF. The national health programme viz National Anti-Malaria
Programme, National Tuberculosis Control Programme, STD Control
Programme, etc. are monitored and evaluated in the department through
proformae SPM-I & II designed by the department. The department
is serving sample survey assessment unit for National Programme
of Elimination of Leprosy. A Sentinel Surveillance Unit under National
Programme for control Blindness has been established in the department
through Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India
in coordination with the department of Ophthalmology.
Post graduation
The department has already conducted research work on Hypertension,
ARI, Diarroheal diseases, family welfare and Tube4rcolosis. Research
is in progress on gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Contraceptives.
Membership of National Consortium
of Training Institutions
The department has been short listed as one of the members of the
Consortium amongst 25 departments of reputed medical colleges in
India.
