ACHIEVEMENTS DURING APRIL, 2006 TO MARCH, 2007 IN GOVT. MEDICAL COLLEGE AND ITS ASSOCIATED HOSPITALS, JAMMU

GOVT. MEDICAL COLLEGE
. DNB course has been commenced in Family Medicine and Microbiology (2 seats each).

• Undergraduate result is > 85% and Post Graduate is > 95%.
• Training of Physiotherapy under graduates (46 students) has been started.
• Our faculty members have been awarded prestigious fellowships and have chaired important National Scientific Sessions.
• Renovation of students laboratories and seminar rooms in the department of Pharmacology, Microbiology and PSM in accordance to the MCI norms.
• State Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with our college and University of Jammu has launched on a Rs. 6.58 crore, project for up-gradation of Human Genetic Research and Counseling centre.
• 45 kanals of land for the Super Specialty Block adjacent to the Medical College has been identified and building plans are underway. The actual work on the project is likely to commence soon through CPWD.
• Purchase of latest equipments for the department of Pathology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology and Radiotherapy.
• A Urban Health Training Centre, Trikuta Nagar, has been constructed and inaugurated.
• Land for the construction of attendants sarai identified and Rs. 95.00 lacs deposited in this account.

Up-gradation of Physiotherapy section and artificial limb centre.
• Air conditioning of the emergency wing.
• Commissioning of a de-addiction centre and construction of an intermediary ICU in ward 3.
• Additional life saving equipments like Pulse Oximeters, Cardiac Monitors, Ventilators and defibrillators have been provided in ICU/CCU.
• Automated cell counters in Pathology and auto Analyzers in Biochemistry Lab and Emergency wing have further enhanced the diagnostic services.
• Advanced surgical technique for spinal and Acetabulum fractures are introduced.
• Initiation of Pain Management clinics, Mind Body clinics i.e. Holistic Techniques like Yoga, Stress Management and Meditation, Coronary Bypass Surgery and Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Immuno Histochemistry technique in research.

Govt. Medical College & Associated Hospitals, Jammu.
ACHIEVEMENTS 2006-07

Govt. Medical College Jammu which was established in 1971 and not only served its initial purpose of producing Medical graduates and Post Graduates to serve the people of the state but also has come up to occupy a prominent place in the map of the recognized Medical Colleges of the Country.

In addition to teaching and training of the MBBS undergraduates, the training of BDS and Physiotherapy under graduates has also been started this year.

DNB course has been commenced in Family Medicine and Microbiology and starting of Post Graduate courses in Forensic Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Psychiatry is being taken up.

At present, 260 students are pursuing the three years Post Graduate Courses in Medical College Jammu and 102 number of Post Graduates, passed out successfully in the year 2006.

Besides other academic achievements, the undergraduate result is > 85% and Post Graduate is > 95%.
Our students have participated and excelled in sport activities, both at State and National level in Inter College Sports meet held as Euphoria 2006 in Chandigarh at LLRM Medical College in Meerut, as PULSE in AIIMS New Delhi.

There were more than 75 publications made in National and International Journals and to update the knowledge and skill of the faculty members and other doctors, Guest Lecturers, Symposia, workshops are being held regularly in the college. More than 22 National Level Conferences and CME were hosted. Peadiatric undergraduate quiz and PGs Neonatalogy Quiz were also held this year.

Our faculty members have been awarded prestigious fellowships and have chaired important National Scientific Sessions.

Dr.Yashpal Sharma, Medical Superintendent,S.M.G.S Hospital,Govt .Medical College Jammu has been elected as"Fellow" of the most prestigious "International Medical Science Academy ACAI (ISMA)" which is associate member of the council for International organization of Medical (CIOMS),Geneva.He has been authorized to write FIMSA as his additional degree.He will be awarded "Fellowship Scroll" at next Annual Conference of IMSA which is being held at Manipal,Karnataka in the month of November 2007

Latest techniques in patient management have introduced in the institution including Advanced surgical technique for spinal and Acetabulum fractures; Pain Management clinics, Mind Body clinics i.e. Holistic Techniques like Yoga, Stress Management and Meditation, Coronary Bypass Surgery and Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Immuno Histochemistry technique in research. Wheat Grass therapy for the management of multi transfused Thalassemia with iron over load and Public Health Management technique for running programmes like RNTCP and RCH.

This year new vital equipments have also been installed like Pulse Oximeters, Cardiac Monitors, Ventilators and defibrillators. Automated cell counters in Pathology and auto Analysers in Biochemistry Lab and Emergency wing have further enhanced the supportive services.

A Urban Health Training Centre, Trikuta Nagar, has been constructed and recently inaugurated which has latest X-ray equipments, Minor OT and Lab facilities.

Renovation of the Govt. Medical College and its Associates Hospitals, Jammu is also been carried out in phased manner. Renovation of students laboratories and seminar rooms in Pharmacology, Microbiology and PSM in accordance to the MCI norms have been completed; upgradation of Physiotherapy section and artificial limb centre, Air conditioning of the emergency wing, functioning of a de-addiction centre and construction of an intermediary ICU in ward 3 has been done.

In SMGS Hospital, upgradation of the library with provision of internet facility, renovation of blood bank, construction of central collection lab, closed circuit monitoring of the Gynae wards, construction of the attendants waiting hall and the addition of 200 beds in the department of Paediatrics is also under way.
Recently, State Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with our college and University of Jammu has launched on a 6.58 crore project for upgradation of Human Genetic Research and Counselling centre.
The upgradation of Govt. Medical Colleges Jammu to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surksha Yojana is also under pipeline, with total cost of Rs. 120 crores, of which 20 crores will be the State’s share. In Medical College, Jammu, the work of Paediatric block at SMGS Hospital has already been taken up while the strengthening of the Emergency Block with addition of 50 beds is likely to start soon. The 45 kanals of land for the super speciality block adjacent to the Medical College has already been identified and building plans are underway. The actual work on the project is likely to commence soon through CPWD. The super speciality block in Jammu will have six super speciality departments of Cardiology, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology and Nephrology. The list of machinery and equipments alongwith its specifications have been finalized in consultation with the expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

Individual Achivements of Faculty members

Dr.Jatindera Singh, Professor Medicine, contributed two chapters in 2007 Edition of "Dr Seshiah's Textbook of Diabetes" published from Chennai. He also contributed chapters on Diabetes in 2006 and 2007 Editions of Association of Physicians og India (API) Medicine Update Textbook published from Mumbai.He was Elected Member National Executive Board of "Diabetes India" headquatered at Mumbai.He was reelected to highly select 4- member All India Diabetes Research Committee of the RSSDI.Dr.Jatinder was one of the Committee member for 2006 National Diabetes Research grant for funding Diabetes related proposals recieved from all over the country.He delivered "National Faculty Lecture" at the "34th Annual All India Diabetes Conference of RSSDI"held at New Delhi in November 2006.He also delivered "National Faculty Lecture" on Diabetes at the Association of Physicians og India (API) 2006 & 2007 Annual Conference(APICON) held at Patna & Goa respectively.He was an invited Faculty at the "American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2006 India meet" held at Chandigarh.He was an invited Faculty at the "2nd International conference(2006) of Diabetes in Pregnancy" held at Chennai and 3rd National Conference of Diabetes in Pregnancy held at Hyderabad in February 2007.He was also enrolled as one of the investigator in the Internationally funded Multi-centric Study on "Metabolic Syndrome and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus" Dr.Jatinder Singh was one of the co-authors/advisors for the "Diabetes in Pregnancy Guidelines 2006" officially released and published in the Journal of Association of Physicians of India(JAPI).He delivered lecture on "Management of Diabetes in Elderly" at JMPA Jammu Dec 2006.Dr.Jatinder Singh delivered lecture on "Diabetes prevalence in Jammu University Faculty" at University Jammu March-2007

Prof. R.K Chrungoo’s paper has been included in the top 100 frequently cited Indian Papers of the preceeding Century. He has been re-elected Vice President of International College of Surgeons

Dr. B.S Pathania delivered guest lectures in National and International meets in 2006. He has been elected as the President North Zone Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India and also awarded the Rashtriya Rattan Award and Gold Medal in Feb 2006.

The Department has been academically active in the Year 2006. Teamwork is a matter of faith in our Department. It has 12 faculty members, 13 Registrars and 27 Post Graduates with 248 bed strength.During 2006 Surgical load was as follows:

1. The Department has introduced holding of weekly surgery audit meetings in which Morbidity and mortality, errors and failures occurring in the preceding week are reported, detected and discussed and corrective steps suggested. Record keeping is reviewed.
2. A regular Biannual Interactive Continuing Surgery Education(ICSE) programme between the Surgery Department of Govt. Medical College Jammu and Srinagar has been started.
3. The Department successfully held two conferences simultaneously in Nov 2006 under the banner “ Twin Conference”
